Letter from Gordon Browne, 1897

Public

An undated Autographed Letter Signed (ALS) from Gordon Browne providing an entertaining account of his early career. "...After the usual time at what may be called 'Dr Whackem's school for the sons of gentlemen', in fact a private school, I had a rather short & rather jerky kind of art school training, partly at S.Kensington which did not come up to my then lofty ideal and longer at Heatherleys. Then worked for a short time under Mr Cooper the engraver with the double branched purpose of earning something & learning how to draw on the wood, a most useless piece of knowledge now a days..." Gordon Frederick Browne (1858-1932), artist and children's book illustrator. He was born in Banstead, the younger son of notable book illustrator Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). From the 1880s, Browne was one of Britain's most prolific illustrators. Part of a collection of letters written by illustrators of Charles Dickens' works.
