Download PDFOne of the official War Diaries of the First Infantry Division of the 16th Battalion (The Canadian Scottish), Canadian Expeditionary Force that cover from the time the Regiment went overseas at the start of the First World War to the time it returned to Canada in April 1919. War diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. The diary provides a daily summary of events, actions, activities, etc. This diary begins with the Battalion in the Brigade Reserve Headquarters and Advanced Battalion Headquarters in Ouse Trench, successful attacks on the enemy at the Drocourt-Queant Line, move to Dainville then to Achicourt and to Berneville, the Battalion being put through a Gas test, wet weather, putting on a show in the theatre, training and inspections, reconnoiter parties, move to the Cagnicourt area and engaging with the enemy, and teh diary ends with them receiving orders to move to Haynecourt to attack the enemy, a tally of casualties and a lost of decorations awarded. The diary includes operation orders, and narratives of the attacks on September 25th and 26th and the Second Battle of Arras on September 2nd.

- The 1918 diaries are 12 months in one bundle with a blue cover and with sub-bundles inside. Most diary pages are handwritten on template pages made of lightweight vellum paper or heavier bond (rag?) paper; some are typewritten; some leaves are not on template pages, size varies.
