- Comrade Yang Kaihui was the intimate comrade-in-arms and wife of our great leader Chairman Mao. While Chairman Mao was establishing a base area in Jiangxi, Comrade Yang kaihui carried on with the struggle against the Guomindang reactionaries. Sadly she was later captured, and was righteously fearless and indomitale in prison and on the execution ground. She died a martyr's death for the cause in November 1930, and is worthy to be known as a great communist hero. Chairman Mao's poem [Reply to Li Shuyi, to the tune of] Dielianhua was written in memory of the martyr Yang Kaihhui. 'Earth suddenly reports the tiger subdued' is a line from that poem, meaning: the Chinese people's overthrow of the reactionary government of Chiang Kai-shek and establishing of New China, [an achievement] comparable to defeating a dragon and subduing a tiger, can bring comfort to the martyr Yang Kaihui and countless other martyrs. Now we have used this line by Chairman Mao for this painting, with an additional layer of meaning, which is that the Central Committee led by Chairman Hua's crushing of the 'Gang of Four' can be compared to overcoming a savage man-eating tiger, and bring comfort to the bold spirits of martyrs.
