The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Monk's Gate Common, England. It has entries about starting a neatness and cleanliness competition in the huts and grounds, a lecture about how to escape and evade when cut off from their own troops and that it is the duty of every soldier to try and escape when taken prisoner, the unit stretcher bearer's passing their St. John's Ambulance tests, a visit from a public relations officer, speaking to the troops regarding the unnecessary and over-use of profanity, the pipe band and mascot dog Wallace entertaining at a Red Cross garden party, a sniper exercise, the troops being finger printed and photographed, a "flush-type latrine" being installed in the Officer's mess and it being a marvel of sanitary engineering and being looked upon with great favour, a court marshal for a Private Glover who was charged with A.W.L and escape while under arrest and who has either been A.W.L or serving a term in detention for that crime the entire time the battalion has been overseas, Glover receiving 8 months detention for his crimes, and mine training and demonstrations, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, driver school, sports day programme, newspaper clipping of pipe band and Wallace, and a syllabus for sniper course.
