The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Hilsea Barracks in Portsmith and the Ryde Area, Isle of Wight, England. It has entries about more issues with rumours about where the battalion will be moving, prepping for a move to Ryse on the Isle of Wight, participating in various training programs and exercises including a smartening-up drill and weapons training, issues with limited numbers of billets, once again the pipe band and the St. Bernard dog mascot Wallace leaving a good impression amongst the local people, planning a children's Xmas party, rehearsing ceremonial drills for a future inspections and visit by the Princess Royal, the people of Ryde being very hospitable, hosting a very successful Christmas party for children where the pipe band and Wallace were the main attractions, the battalion having Christmas dinner with the officers serving the troops as is tradition, getting typhus inoculations, and a New Year's Eve dance, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, weekly progress reports, and movement orders.
