Public

The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Monk's Gate Common, England. It has entries about a volleyball competition, getting told about the need for more intense training particularly about battle drills, platoon movements, camouflage, and the removal of mines, a lecture from a Hindu officer of the British Army about India, a lecture about the importance of security and that laxity in security is always most evident when victory is in view, lecture and demonstration about mines where they set off one with a carrier track on top of it, a Captain returning to the unit after being attached to a battalion in North Africa, a competition where the best shot would get two days leave, a lecture about the North African Campaign, watching a captured German propaganda film at the Legion called "Victory in the West", a demonstration of German tactics, a wedding for one of the officers, and prepping for a rapid move to an as of yet unknown location, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, report on First Army in North Africa, schedule of lectures, newspaper clipping about giving a totem pole as a gift, and exercises.
