War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 55, March 1, 1944 to March 31, 1944

Public

The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at the Ryde Area, Isle of Wight, England. It has entries about receiving 400 assault jackets that are more comfortable and lighter than the old ones made of webbing and haversacks and expecting to get enough for the whole battalion before they see action, moving for an intense exercise where they slept outside with not enough blankets for a week, a skin inspection of the troops, night vision training and testing, their football team winning the Canadian Army in England Championship, the pipe band playing in London for "Salute to the Army Week" and having the honour of playing for the opening in Trafalgar Square, their mascot dog Wallace stealing the show at a pipe band performance, and a few successful dances, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, exercises, progress reports, and A Brief History of the First Battalion of the Canadian Scottish Regiment booklet.
