One of the official War Diaries of the First Infantry Division of the 16th Battalion (The Canadian Scottish), Canadian Expeditionary Force that cover from the time the Regiment went overseas at the start of the First World War to the time it returned to Canada in April 1919. War diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. The diary provides a daily summary of events, actions, activities, etc. This diary begins with the Battalion in billets in Somain for the first half of the month where the engaged in training and inspections, Armistice signed on November 11th and orders received that the hostilities would cease at 1100 hours, arranging a celebration with a bonfire and the villagers where there were scenes of great enthusiasm, inspection by General MacDonnell, moves from Somain to Herin, to Basieux, to Wasmuel where they had a celebration where the pipe band played and the Commanding Officer received the Victoria Cross and the men carrying the Colonel around the town, moving to Soignies in Belgium where the mayor named the square "Place Canadian Scottish" in honour of the Regiment, marching through Nivelles, Vieux Genappe, St. Gery, Sart D'Avril, Couthin and finally Andennes. The diary ends with a list of casualties and decorations awarded, and Operation Orders,

  • The 1918 diaries are 12 months in one bundle with a blue cover and with sub-bundles inside. Most diary pages are handwritten on template pages made of lightweight vellum paper or heavier bond (rag?) paper; some are typewritten; some leaves are not on template pages, size varies.
