Jacob Epstein's Madonna & Child - clipping [All in a Lifetime illustrated autobiography chapter Page 42]
Clipping is part of Archie Wills' Autobiography, "All in a Lifetime". Archie Wills writes in a typed caption under the image, "All units in the Canadian Corps had code names, part of the overall security pattern. The 58th Battery's code was "Madonna." When I took over the sacrifice gun in a sunken road at the time of the Germany advance in March, 1918, I was surprised and, even, astonished, to learn that the code name would be 'Madonna's Child.' I felt the security people could have thought up a name more in keeping with the slaughterhouse atmosphere we existed in. But as we always said: 'C'est la guerre.'"
