  • The shin hanga movement also included artists like Kotondo Torii (b. 1897) [54] and Kobayakawa Kiyoshi (1898-1948) [55], who made prints of beautiful women which rivalled those of Shinsui. Two others, Ishiwata Koitsu (b. 1897) and Kasamatsu Shiro (b. 1898) [61], made excellent atmospheric landscapes. In addition, Koson, or Shoson (1877-1945) [69] worked from sketches to create some fine prints of birds and flowers. At the turn of the century, some Westerners went to Japan to study traditional printmaking. Of these, the most important were the English artist, Elizabeth Keith (1887-?), who made several prints based on her tours of China and Korea, and the French artist, Paul Jacoulet (19027-60) [71], who published some fine studies of Oriental women and landscapes from Asia and the South Pacific.
