Breeding. This morning for the first
time this year the buck in Beacon
Hill is showing active interest in
the doe.
4 PM. Doe lying in sun after
several rainy days. Buck
approaches fence, paws the ground
with front feet, charges
fence in front of me several
times. Approaches doe lowering
head + neck + raising muzzle
as he approaches. Doe acknowledges
his approach by looking round
+ raising her muzzle. As he
comes closer she rises +
trots away a few paces.
Buck stands looking after
then makes short rush at
her with neck lowered
+ muzzle raised, she moves
off, urinates. Buck approaches
doe thus at intervals of 10 to
30 seconds for next half
hour. Doe urinates a few
drops every 2 or 3 minutes.
Fawn appears + buck rushes
at it openly hostile, fawn
retreats. The buck smelled
the does urine frequently +
grimaced each time.
