- Cowichan Lake. Feb. [February] 7/40 [1940].
Activities contd. [continued] at 10:50 after standing chewing her
cud for 15 min. [minutes] in the shade
of a fir tree.
From 11 o'clock all deer were
bedded. At 2:15 two very
large bucks were bedded in
the sun on an open knoll
on the lee side, both had
their heads down wind. Two
young does with [word crossed out] near them were
browsing in desultory fashion
then lay down facing same
way. Another small deer bedded
opposite way.
Deer seemed to be wilder than
usual at least during the early
part of the day
Food. [underlined] Noticed only one place in which
Pipsissewa had been eaten,
that where it was growing in
the shade in a moist place
+ was tall, succulent + pallid.
Found two trees of Juniperus
scopulorum [underlined] near the top of Bald
Mt. [Mountain], both had been moderately
browsed.
In several places the moss
on knolls was entirely picked
