  • LEFT PAGE 246 To Polish Brass Dip for a short time in a strong hot acqueous solution of Caustic Alkali, rinse in water, dip for a few moment in Nitric Acid diluted with an Equal quantity of water rinse again and finish with whiting. August 10 1878 --- Test for Watered Milk Dip a bright Knitting needle in a deep vessel of milk and withdraw it in an upright position. If the milk is pure, some of the milk will hang to the needle, but if the least water has been added, none will hang to the needle. Oct 26 1878 --- To Melt of Jewellry Put it into a crucible with a little Borax and melt on a Kitchen Fire August 10 1878 --- "Armenian" Cement Soak isinglass in water until it is soft. Then dissolve it in the smallest possable quantity of proof spirits by the aid of gentle heat (over warm water) in 2 oz [ounces] of this dissolve 10 grains of pale gum Ammoniacum (in tears) by tritunation in a morter then add 6 large tears of gum mastic dissolved in 6 times thier weight of rectified spirits. Mix and take a teaspoonful in a glass of weak brandy and water for diarehha and a tablespoonful in weak brandy and water for Cholera. May 12 1886 --- Gutta Percha Cement Dissolve a quantity of gutta percha in chloroform, sufficient to make it like honey. When spread it will dry in a few minutes. Heat the surfaces and apply together. It will cement leather patches on boots. May 12 1866 --- Aquarium Cement 1 part by measure of Litharge, 1 part Plaster Paris; 1 part fine beach Sand; 1/3 part fine pulverized Rosin. Mix all together. This may be kept for years in a well stoppered Bottle. When used, make it into a putty with Boiled Linseed Oil. A little patent dryer may be used. It will stand water at once, Either salt or fresh. February 25 1865 --- "Shoe Polish" Gum Arabic 1 ounce, Lump Sugar 1/2 oz [ounce], [Ivory?] Black 1/2 oz [ounce], Water Enough to make it Easily applied with a sponge. Dissolve the sugaar and gum and grind the Black on a slab with it. No friction required.
