258 To Cut Glass
Take an old 3 cornered file, heat
it red hot and suddenly plunge it
into a previously prepared mixture
of Salt and Ice, stirring it about
so as to cool it very quick. Now
grind the point on a stone, preservin
the 3 corners as much as possable. To
use it, nick the glass on the edge, lay
it on a perfectly smooth surface, and
draw the file over it, useing moderate

To Waterproff Boots
In a pint of best Lard Oil, dissolve
a piece of paraffine the size of a
hickory nut, under gentle heat, say
130 [degrees] Rub this on your boots once a
month. To get paraffine, use a piece
of paraffine Cande [candle] November 20 1867

add 2 cyphers (00) to the result.

Cement for Knife Handles
1 pound of Colophony and 8 oz [ounces] Sulphur
melted together, and Either Kept in a
powder or in bars. To use it, mix 1
part of the material with 1/2 part of
Iron filings, fine sand, or brick dust,
and fill the hole in the handle. Heat the
tang of the handle and put it in and
let in cool. July 10 1869

Remedy for Lock Jaw 259
Use Spirits of Turpentine. Rub it into the
wound well and put on a rag saturated
with it over the place. Good also for Croup.
A few drops on a lump of Sugar may be
taken in severe cases. In very severe and
dangerous cases where the teeth are very
tightly closed, if a piece of Plug Tobacco
is well moistened with water and laid
on the stomach, it will cause the teet tho open,
but it is somewhat dangerous on account
of the nicotine in the Tobacco. August 28 1869

Storm Glass
Take a long narrow Bottle or a Test Tube,
and put into it 2 1/2 drams of Camphor
and 11 drams Spirits of Wine; when the
Camphor is dissolved, which it will soon
do by shaking it, add the following mixture;
Water 9 drams, Nitrate of Potash (or
Saltpeter) 38 grains, Muriate of Ammonia
(Sal Ammoniac) 38 grains. Dissolve all
these salts in the water before mixing with
the spirits. Then shake the whole well
together. Cork the bottle well and wax
the top and make a small hole in the
cork with a red hot needle.
