Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Saturday Ap 20 Up late. To Ca l'Abat to buy chicken. Bought a hen instead. The white and red paper-like flowers out. (Summer flowering carnations out. Exchanged mint with Strenge for sultanas and curry powder.) The Ca l'Abat Francisco said that when he was young he would sing all day, never repeat himself — all Mallorquin songs. You can always tell a Mallorquin song, “ La primera palabra es tambien la ultima —not like those written by men of letters.” Busy with preparations for tomorrow. Kurtz came & borrowed books. In the evening Gelat came and Laura ,he and I discussed the financial situation: it appeared certain that after an investment of not quite £3000 would bring in £1000 a year from electric light in Deyá, Valldemossa, and from water selling in Lluchalcari, thePuig etc. He will know by San Juan about the accessibility and quantity of water & we promised to let him know by then how much money would be available this year. He is trying to smother his excitement: says that he wants us to be able to live without constant writing for money. It was only by trying to find water at right height for Canellun roof that this new stream was located.

Story of two robbers from Inca who planned an attack about 30 years ago on a house in San Marsal. The S. Communists Kurtz & Ferres came to coffee after supper. He told a not quite credible story of his arrival in Spain & crossing border. Salamo & I to Ca l'Abat to pay for Easter hen (10.50 [pts]) and order a new one.
