Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Friday Oct 30 Daily Mail heading was “ Franco's New Drive in North” The Telegraph was The Tide Turns. Lazy morning: walk with Tom, Julie, L, Walter & Violet around Old Bursledon. Remarkable contrast of old and new graveyards – dignified old stone squares, & awful white marble modern celtic crosses and red sandstone (?) obelisks and things. Betty to lunch. Walter gave us apples & walnuts & then we all went in the two cars, to Chichester to James & Mary (also Nancy & Dudley Cutler & baby) to tea. Then to London, direct to Norman's housewarming (sandwiches in train). There came L, Tom, Julie, me, Karl, Robin,(with gift ashtrays) Len, Jane, Honor, Alan, Gordon, Molly, also Gertrude Hermes, Noxon, John Pudney, Chrystal Herbert, Norman's advertising boss & wife, and an artist (?) who had taken over Norman's flat. I drank whiskey. The chief trouble was Molly who was dull: & Tom who had drunk too much said to Gordon: “I wish I knew some way of getting Julie away from that awful Canadian woman.”
