Robert Graves Diary, 1935-1939
User Collection Public
The collection consists of a complete autograph diary detailing four years in the lives of Robert Graves and Laura Riding. The period covered is from 22nd February 1935 to 6th May 1939, during which time Graves and Riding lived in Mallorca, Lugano, England, Brittany and Pennsylvania. The 1,546 page diary also contains 117 enclosures of letters from Graves' children, photographs, and press cuttings, as well as 99 other miscellaneous items such as typescripts of poems, articles and letters.
This important diary represents a highly detailed record of four years in the lives of both Robert Graves and Laura Riding, from whom he was seldom separated for more than a few hours throughout the period that it covers. As well as giving full accounts of domestic events - building projects, gardening, jam-making, shopping expeditions, visits from friends and the like - Graves notes precisely the work that he and Laura Riding have accomplished each day, both separately and in collaboration. All their working projects are minutely documented.
Please also see the Robert Graves Diary project website.

- July 24 Friday. My birthday. Hot: slept without a sheet. Everyone working normally. Impression is that the Fascist's will surrender, Mallorca being cut off from supplies & the soldiers not being with the Fascist's. Gelat came & gave his account of the D r episode. (He told the Fascist's when they asked for light and said that they might shoot one another. G. said “Then don't shoot so much!” [)] Now it is said that the plane did not drop bombs but was fired at, the anti-aircraft shells falling one in the Captain General's house, one in a barracks, one in the Rambla . Sounds unlikely. Medico proudly showing his door. Bartolomé made a step up by the refuse-pit. Bathed. Saw a warship going to Palma about 5 o'clock. Foreign. A blank day: did Schools . Palma now reported quiet. At night tried to get England on radio but audition bad. Government making progress in south and centre. Dark hibiscus flowering for first time.

- July 26 Sunday Woken at 6 by a plane that went over Palma. It (or another) returned at two o clock after flying over Soller. The One that flew over Inca yesterday dropped leaflets and squibs. Schools. Laura on last bit of Troy . Greatest heat yet; but a breeze. Wild mimosa flowering again and that bush with white berries near the arbol de pisos . Nobody is allowed to talk in groups of three or more in public places, or to listen to neighbours' radios, or to circulate news unfavourable to the military. In the villages Fascist's are eating and drinking at expense of shops and hotels with at rifle's point, and black-and-tanning. Tonight's Fabrica radio reported Government advances towards Cordoba, Vittoria, Saragossa. Madrid gave railway timetables (proving the opposition news to be lies). Palma reported bombarded. No car came to Deyá so it isn't known what happened.

- July 27th Monday. Bartolomé filling in wall near refuse-pit. No more roses, practically, but zinnias and dahlias and carnations for the house. Don Bernardo has decided that all is lost and gone into Palma to get out money from the bank. So has Schw. The camion has to go or it would look like disobedience to the military. Pancho as volunteer has been sent to a barracks far from Palma where he only gets 15 centimos a day. Schools. Note from Millonario that Radio Catalunya is asking for L's whereabouts. Palma was only bombarded with leaflets & news. Saw a copy of Vanguardia dropped by a plane (July 25th). On radio from England heard Government has definitely got the upper hand. (Mola beaten back from Guadarrama) and heavy fighting between La Linea & Malaga. Story of escape of captured hidroplane hydroplane from Mallorca: the pilot pretended it wouldn't fly without a lot of petrol and then soared off.
